There is a lot of excitement around the release of Joker: Folie A Deux, the sequel to Todd Phillip’s crime thriller Joker. The movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix as the sinister villain, became a mega-hit at the box office, grossing over $1 Billion USD worldwide. The movie was a cultural phenomenon and caused a lot of stir. One such moment occurred when Joaquin Phoenix said the Joker had more ‘raw and visceral violence’ than Marvel’s Avengers movies.

When the announcement for the first Joker movie was made, there were a lot of mixed reactions. Previously, Jared Leto portrayed that role in the Suicide Squad, and his version of the Joker was very different.

However, upon its release, the Todd Phillips directorial received rave reviews and became one of the highest-grossing R-rated films ever. He was raking in critical and commercial acclaim for the Phoenix as well.

Comparisons in metrics and star cast are common in Hollywood. It is mostly during press tours that we get the most exclusive bits of trivia and sometimes controversial statements. Joaquin drew the comparisons in response to how violent the Joker was.

Talking to SFX magazine, Joaquin said, “I don’t know how many people die in the Avengers, but there’s a lot,” referring to the destructive violence depicted in the superhero movies. He continued, “The violence in this (Joker) is immediate, on-screen, and a little more visceral and raw.”

He also said he was more comfortable with the Joker’s gore and bloody fingernails approach. The Napoleon star also said he had no hesitation about the violence and wanted it to feel real.

Furthering the comparisons, he said, “What happens in a lot of movies is that you get numb to it; you’re killing 40,000 people, you don’t feel it. While being a fictional story in a fictional world, you always want it to feel real. Everything that happens in this movie as far as violence goes, you feel it.”

And to be honest, the violence in the movie Joker feels fiercely honest and real. The movie certified audiences’ belief in Joaquin Phoenix‘s talent. His portrayal of the Joker doesn’t disparage its predecessors, like Heath Ledger and Jared Leto‘s performances, but instead puts new life into it.
